Is the
climate crisis really the inevitable result of colonialism, racism and
patriarchy? The result of a global system that built on systemic social injustice?
We need to see the climate crisis not as a stand-alone issue floating separately from everything else, but as the grand culmination of societal injustices that have been building up for centuries. We must speak truth to power, call out these systems of oppression and put social justice at the center of our fight for a livable future. We must pressure elected leaders, corporations, the news media and others in power not only to abandon fossil fuels and other climate-destructive activities but also to address the systems of oppression that gave rise to the climate crisis in the first place.
Cities
Are Already Electric
Glass
skyscrapers are energy vampires that help make buildings in cities larger
contributors of greenhouse gasses that the cars that clog the streets of those
cities.
A 2017 study found that 66 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in New York came from buildings. This is comparable to research on Toronto, which shows that buildings create 60 percent, and the vast majority, of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions. The two main sources from buildings are electricity consumption and natural gas, which are used for cooling, heating, refrigeration, and lighting.
Hey Mate,
A Little Help Here
Off the
coast of western Australia, a massive manta ray turns to a snorkeller for help.
Wild manta ray has been filmed letting a snorkeller remove three hooks from her eye. Touching footage appears to show the manta asking for help, and remaining totally still while as if she knows what is going on. The three-metre wide ray, nicknamed Freckles locally, was filmed on Ningaloo Reef in western Australia. When Jack Wilton saw the hooks under her right eye, he decided he had to try and help. The underwater photographer took a dozen dives down to five metres to remove them with a pair of pliers, which could prevent her developing an infection and potentially going blind.
Train
Load of Water Arrives in Chennai
It is hard to
fully comprehend the depth of the drought that have left the Indian city of
Chennia literally running out of water. The
city’s reservoirs are dry and water is now being shipped by rail to try
and provide a minimum level of water to sustain the city’s population of seven
million.
A special train loaded with 2.5 million liters (approximately 660,000 gallons) of water reached the parched Indian city of Chennai Friday, The Times of India reported. The water was sent to relieve India's sixth-largest city, which is running out of water due to lack of rain.
What Me
Worry?
Will climate charge still occur if we ignore it?
That’s apparently the view of the Trump administration.
State Department intelligence analyst Rod Schoonover drafted a critical report on U.S. security issues, only to see half of that report cut away by officials from the Trump White House—the half of the report that dealt with threats caused by the climate crisis. In response to being asked to update Congress on national security, without discussing the biggest threat facing national security, Schoonover has resigned.
…the science he used in evaluating the effects of the climate crisis came primarily from peer-reviewed scientific journals. What that information revealed is the range of threats that a warming planet presents including huge shifts in population with climate refugees creating a series of humanitarian crises, a greater pressure on remaining resources, and widespread political instability.
