The Highest Crime of All

Red Areas will be Underwater by 2100
Earlier today Trump’s acting Chief of Staff, Mick Mulvaney, admitted to Trump’s various high crimes and misdemeanors. Included in his confessions was his announcement that in an egregious violation of the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause, Trump has decided to hold the next year’s G7 Summit meeting at his own failing Doral National Hotel and Golf Club.
Mulvaney announced that the 2020 summit of seven of the world’s most powerful industrialised countries will take place at the National Doral Miami, one of the president’s golf resorts in Florida, despite widespread ethics concerns and an ongoing impeachment inquiry into Trump’s conduct.
But, the most disgusting thing that Mulvaney said wasn’t about those crimes.  The most painful admission was that Trump would not include any discussion of the climate crisis in his agenda for the meeting.  So, the leaders of the world’s wealthiest countries will meet and not discuss the single most important issue facing the planet.
The irony of having this meeting in Florida is just salt in the wound. Florida is one of the US states that are already feeling the impact of global warming – more powerful hurricanes, raising sea water, stifling heat waves, etc.
Gabriel Filippelli, a climate scientist who advised the state department under the Obama administration, criticized the administration for ignoring the crisis.
“It means that irony is definitely NOT on the agenda!” Filippelli said on Twitter, referring to the decision to ignore the source of rising temperatures and sea-level rise at an international meeting outside of one of the country’s most climate-vulnerable cities.
Trump’s administration is a criminal enterprise, but its greatest crimes are being committed against our children’s future.
